Żary was originally a medieval
city surrounded by 15th c. walls. In subsequent
centuries, a Renaissance castle, a Baroque palace
and numerous Art Nouveau tenement houses were
built. A splendid Gothic parish church where classical
music concerts are organized dominates the Old
Town architecture. Moreover, picturesque cycling
and walking trails cross the town and lead towards
the neighboring Żary Heights and to the Green
Forest. The town also has a well-developed accommodation
base as well as a complex of indoor swimming pools,
bowling alleys and a casino. Sports fields, tennis
courts and gyms are available for sports enthusiasts.
The beautiful woods that surround Żary are abundant
in blueberries and mushrooms and invite fans of
strolling. Horse riding enthusiasts can visit
the nearby stables and enjoy the attractions they
offer. The green tourism farms outside the town
are also worth spending some time at. The town
itself is home to plenty of annual sports and
cultural events featuring famous artists. The
Eurosilesia International Music Festival is regularly
held in April. At the beginning of June, the Festival
of Żary is exuberantly celebrated, which is followed
by the International Open-air Painting and Sculpture
Meetings, the International Street Theater Festival,
the Viennese Music Festival and the Telemann Concert,
which takes place in December. Theater and art
lovers can explore the town's rich offer, including
its Exhibition Hall.

Żary is a county capital with a population of
over 40,000. It is an economic and cultural hub
for the Lubuskie Province and a major industrial
center. Its location on the border has influenced
the city's development. 20-40 km from Żary, four
Polish-German border crossing points are located
in Olszyna, Łęknica, Przewóz, and a railroad border
crossing point in Forst.
In addition, national roads no. 27 and 12 intersect
in the region, and the A-18 expressway (now called
E-36) runs close by. Last, but not least, one
may travel by Inter City train to Berlin and Hamburg.
A beltway surrounds the town.
In the ranking of Local Governments organized
by Rzeczpospolita daily, the town of Żary was
ranked 15th among 100 municipalities in Poland.
